know some people were disappointed by the fact that Ken Levine isn't heading up Bioshock 2. But when I heard news that Jordan Thomas would be taking his place, my ears perked up. I'm fairly certain the majority of you have never heard of him, but he's got an intriguing pedigree. Before joining the Bioshock team he was the lead designer on Thief: Deadly Shadows. The game had a mixed reception, from Thief fans and newcomers alike. Despite criticisms, though, the game just oozed with atmosphere. Everything from the sound design, to the lighting, to the locales resulted in quite an immersive experience. But the penultimate experience of the game, was the Shalebridge Cradle, which Thomas was personally responsible for. Those of you that have played the game likely don't need to be reminded of this particular level. I think it's honestly one of the most frightening levels I've ever played in a game. It really bucks traditional video game horror design. It's never what you expect, and the way it frightens you is extremely unique. There isn't a single cheap scare in the level, but there was a rock in the bottom of my stomach the entire time. It's cerebral and it stays with you.Thomas was also a level designer for Bioshock, where he was behind Fort Frolic.I thought that Fort Frolic was brilliant, one of the best (if not THE) best levels in the game. It was weird, scary (statues, anyone?), and just plain different from the rest of the game. I loved it. Am I right in assuming that a lot of people enjoyed that level?So...I'm optimistic about Thomas directing Bioshock 2. Maybe the fact that he hasn't headed up a project this big before is cause for concern. But having the game being directed by the guy behind both Fort Frolic and the Shalebridge Cradle -- two of my all time favorite levels -- is something that gives me faith in the game.
