No list of embarrassing video game companies would be complete without a good hard look at Sega. Formerly the number-one console maker in America and the absolute acme of arcade development, today the company is a (barely) living example of how to completely squander both consumer goodwill and a successful brand-name.
The trick, it would seem, is to make every possible effort to fail.
Sega is the Michael Jackson of videogames: a hard-working company that rose to superstardom through a sure-fire combination of sheer talent and slick image marketing, only to succumb to its own poor judgment, self-destructive habits and bewildering delusion. Like Jacko, the Sega of today in no way resembles the former hardware and software juggernaut that it once was. It's a shadow of a has-been, an embarrassing footnote to a powerful legacy, a freakish failure better known for its inexplicable quirks than for its ability to entertain.
