PS3 entro l'anno in Giappone!
A report which appeared in the latest edition of the Commercial Times claims that Sony is, contrary to the official company line and the wider beliefs of the world, poised to release its PlayStation 3 this year.
The report, which cites unnamed contacts at a “major Taiwanese electronic manufacturer” hints at Sony trumping Nintendo and Microsoft with a coup so fantastic, it beggars belief. What’s more, the PlayStation 3 will go on sale in Japan mid 2003, incorporating Toshiba’s Cell micro-processor.
What’s more, the report states that Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Engineering, the current manufacturer of the PS2, will begin trial runs of the PlayStation 3 as early as next month.
“The report is wrong,'' said Koichiro Katsurayama, press spokesman at SCEJ. “The timing of the successor machine to PlayStation 2 has not been decided.”
As ever, there’s rarely smoke without fire, though this does seem to be massively wide of the mark. Journalists make mistakes, that’s to be expected, but it seems that in this case, the Commercial Times has swallowed a massive lie, or picked up on and magnified gossip from Taiwan’s fiercely competitive electronics manufacturing industry.
It is however, entirely possible that production feasibility runs would be taking place at this point in the PlayStation 3’s research and development lifecycle. Churning out a few cases, complete with AV, controller and power modules in place would not be unreasonable.
